ABOUT the Project

Project Jellyfish is run by professional Marine Biologists.  We are a supplier of captive bred jellyfish, knowledge and associated products.  We have over 15 years of experience working with an amazing variety of marine animals.  One of the most fascinating animals we have worked with are jellyfish and we have started Project Jellyfish to allow others to share in our privileged experience of these creatures.

Our aim is to breed and supply fascinating jellyfish to all who wish to care for them.  We supply affordable livestock & services to everyone from hobbyists to zoos, aquariums, schools and the film industry.

Our company ethos is simply, to be as responsible as possible.  Not to take these animals for granted and to protect the environment wherever possible

.

  • We captive breed our jellyfish to keep our impact on the wild populations and environment to a minimum.  This has the benefit of allowing us greater control of what we can supply and reduces costs associated with importing.

  • Support animal charities such as the WWF and Aspinal Foundation in their efforts

  • We perform a beach clean every time we collect the natural seawater that we use (tide permitting)

  • Participate in sharing knowledge and time in research projects to better science's understanding of these creatures and the environment

  • To use the most efficient methods & equipment to reduce our environmental impact

ABOUT the Team
Dennis Chamberlain

Since primary school I knew I wanted to be a marine biologist and my life from that point was focused on this outcome.

All my studies and vast amounts of my free time were devoted to absorbing knowledge about animals and the world we live in.  The pinnacle of my studies came when graduating from Bangor University (Wales, UK) with a BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology with Zoology.

From here my professional career began.  I spent many amazing years working for the public aquarium company SEA LIFE.  Here I could put my studies to practical use and continue my education, learning so many things you couldn't learn anywhere else!  During my time at SEA LIFE I became a supervisor & worked with a number of animals from endangered Spiny Seahorses, to very large tropical sharks such as the Spotted Wobbegong.  I have lead & taken part in a number of breeding programmes for animals that I have cared for such as Seahorses, Jellyfish, Sharks, Squid & Lumpsuckers.

As well as knowing how to care for these animals, it was imperative to know how to source them, quarantine them and provide as well as maintain their environments.  In order to do this my knowledge extends to medication, tank & filtration design/implementation, transport.

I left SEA LIFE to peruse a family and one day my own business where I could share my passion & knowledge with others.

Here begins Project Jellyfish!

Ruth Chamberlain

Since I was young I knew I wanted to work with animals. I completed my HND animal management course at Askham Bryan in York and went on to gain a BSc  (Hons) in Coastal Marine Biology at Hull University, Scarborough campus.

Following University my career began at SEA LIFE's Displays Development Department in Weymouth. This was a quarantine facility where I worked breeding and caring for a variety of jellyfish species, supplying them to all SEA LIFE Centres across UK and Europe. I started in Weymouth as an aquarist, but soon became a senior aquarist travelling to other sites to give jellyfish husbandry advice and training. In my third year I was promoted to Breeding Supervisor overseeing and providing advice to all SEA LIFE Centres with regards to jellyfish and seahorses.

In 2012 I started working for SEA LIFE London as a senior aquarist where I helped to develop and maintaining the  largest UK jellyfish display "Ocean invaders" and ran the jellyfish breeding quarantine area.

Throughout my time at SEA LIFE I have had the opportunity to train with some of the best jellyfish experts in the world. I went to Ocean Park, Hong Kong to learn about large jellyfish systems, tank design, maintenance and  a wide variety of jellyfish species. I have also attended "Jelly School" at Monterey Bay, California a tailored course providing a wealth of knowledge on all things jelly! I had such inspiration from Monterey that I set-up SEA LIFE's own version "Jelly School UK" where SEA LIFE staff from UK and Europe could come to London to attend a two day course of practical and educational advice working with my team and on our displays.

Over the years I have gained a great amount of experience working with different jellyfish species and tank designs. I have a  passion for training and inspiring others to become better and more knowledgeable jellyfish aquarists. With our ever growing family we have decided to add a few more mouths to feed and start up our business Project Jellyfish.
